Providing a clear and rigorous set of expectations

WHAT DO THESE STANDARDS MEAN FOR MY STUDENT?

South Dakota has had content standards in place for many years. The new standards in English and math are aligned to today’s expectations for college and career readiness – meaning that students who leave the K-12 system should be better prepared to compete in our global economy.

The standards promote the following:
• Deeper understanding of the key concepts students need to succeed as independent thinkers;
• Students’ ability to apply knowledge to real-world situations;
• Instruction that places more emphasis on understanding and application, as opposed to memorization and test-taking
• Richer, more authentic types of assessment
